Sunroof Switch Replacement - Anyone done this? 900 1992

Hello. From the symptoms I had and the FAQ's I think the switch is bad. It was working intermittmently in both the vent position (back tipped up) and the usual slide it back position, the more and more intermittently consistent with the switch failing, and now I don't want to use it anymore until I replace it. The switch appears to be a fairly inexpensive item. Any suggestions on how to take the fascia apart to get access to the switch? Anyone done this? By the way, the hot restart problem I was having last year appeared to go away when it got colder which coincided with replacing the fuel injection pump relay, the one behind the console. When it started getting hot here a couple weeks ago, the problem reasserted itself. I think I beat it to death by replacing both the fuel injector relay (was surely installed when the car was built per the date code) and the crank sensor (RPM sensor). No problems since and it is definitely HOT here in DFW now.

I had good luck simply cleaning the contacts in the switch -- over one year so far, and still working flawlessly. Once you have the switch out of the dash, you'll see how it comes apart. It will take you all of about 5 minutes to clean the contacts. Then plug it back in and see if it works. If not, order the new switch, and all you've lost is 5 minutes.

Just my 2 cents... arguably worth that.

I replaced the sunroof switch in my '93 940. The plastic fascia may be removed by carefully prying it out starting at the end farthest from the steering wheel and working toward the steering column. There is a fairly stout metal clip about half-way. Don't start at the steering column or you'll break the plastic there. I learned how to do this from the 700/900 FAQ, check those to be sure my memory is right.

Once the fascia is off, the switches come with it. The sunroof switch has an electrical connector which you must disconnect. Then the switch is held into the fascia by plastic clips on the side of the switch. You press those inward to relaese the switch. It's fairly obvious at this point.

This is a good time to check and replace any of the light bulbs which illuminate the switches in the fascia.

      Dear Jim,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. I just pulled the fascia (on the passenger side of the steering wheel). I started in the "blank section" in the center, on the back of which the large metal clip is attached.

I used a plastic putty knife, inserted the blade at the bottom, at a 45 degree angle. I pushed down on the handle, and the clip started to release. A little more pressure, and the clip released.

I then withdrew the putty knife, and used it to lift -- very, very GENTLY -- the narrow frame that surrounds the climate control unit.

Once that was free, I lifted the section that goes around the ignition.

I then disconnected the switches and the light unit.

If the switch is on the door-side of the steering wheel, I'd start under the section, with the lettering on it, as there likely is a spring clip behind that.

      Yours faithfully,

      spook
