Is there a brake light reset? Or am I missing something? 700

Just replaced my front brake pads, and rotors, and calipers. However, now, the brake light (not the one for the parking brake) is on and will not go out. There's plenty of fluid in the line, no leaks. Is there a reset button for the brake light, or some sequence I can employ to make the light to go out?

In the process of doing the work you created an imbalance on the brake system- much as would happen if a line ruptured or a caliper seal leaked enough not to build pressure. The brake failure light is to alert you to this type of problem.

The switch for the light is in the brake junction block down below the master cylinder (follow the lines). The "exploded" view of the internals is displayed below.

I have heard that at times a light on after working on the system sometimes rights itself but I do not know how that might be. You should be able to unscrew the large plugs at the ends of the block and carefully push one way or the other and have the light go out because you will have centered the slide portion of the switch. Good luck.

Not shown in that picture are 2 springs at either end of the the piston. By the action of the springs the piston should center by itself when pressures on both sides are equal. Sometimes it sticks, corrosion from moisture in the system, miscellaneous crud, whatever, the result of not bleeding the brake system as recommended. Try whacking the junction box with a hammer, that may center the piston.

It has been some time since I disassembled and photographed that brake block, but I don't remember any springs at each end of the slide. I believe that had they been there I would have included them in the photo.

I also don't know how they would have figured into the scheme of things. It would seem that if there were springs at the ends they would prevent the slide from staying on once you released your foot from the pedal (and the pressure from the system). This type of a setup would only allow the light to flash on as long as your foot was applying pressure- it doesn't seem that that would signal a failure to the average driver.

I hope to find time to look into this by removing a brake block from one of the parts cars and opening it up for a look see.

        Randy

Thanks to those who responded. Will check it more thoroughly this evening and let you know.
