Transmission swap question 700 1986

I have an '86 240 with a bad engine but a good automatic transmission and a '86 740 with a good engine but a bad manual transmission. Is it a big deal to put the 240 tranny in the 740?

    Transmission swap question 240 into 740. 700 1986

This swap can be done, but I believe that you will run into a problem with driveshaft lengths.

First off, you're going to swap a Manual and an Automatic. They're different lengths and thus would require keeping the repective driveshafts with them (assuming a 240-240 swap or a 740-740 swap). However, the 240 and the 740 have different driveshafts (if I remember correctly) and thus will not allow the swap.

You can make the swap work, if you do the following:
    1. Get a driveshaft from a scrapyard from a 740/760 that has an AW-70 or AW-71 transmission (not from a vehicle with the ZF trans).
    2. Move the 240 Automatic (AW-70 Trans) into the 740, but use the newly acquired driveshaft instead of the two old ones that you already have.

You may want to consider just grabbing a used Manual transmission for your 740. I can get them for about $35 in my local U-Wrench-It salvage yard and most yard prices are in the range of $30-$100.

    God bless,
    Fitz Fitzgerald.

    Plug and play. Same trans.
