speed sensor casting 200 1989

Was trying to install a new engine speed sensor yesterday. Old one had probably never been replaced and was really STUCK. The long and short of it is I pried too hard and broke the casting it's mounted in. Looks impossible to replace without dropping the transmission because of the location of the nuts that hold it on. Will cheerfully accept any advice as to: 1) a source for the part, 2) the name of some magical adhesive I could use as at least a temporary fix, and 3) a way to get at those nuts without dropping the trans. Thanks in advance.

Same exact thing happened to me. Cost for new mouting bracket from dealer - about $25. Excellent mechanic dropping tranny - about $225. Had to do it since I didn't have the setup to drop the tranny myself - If you're in the NYC area I can recommend the same shop to you. They did a really good job and relatively inexpensive for NYC.

I did same thing on our 89 245 . I basically set it up in a blob of
silicone which i built up over 2 days .Drove it like that for almost
a year but it was not an acurate setup and kept bringing up the speed
sensor error code and caused hard starting.Got tranny shop to drop the
AW70(they can do this very quick compared to me)and replaced the bracket
    ($20.00cdn)which i got from dealer .Tranny in&outcost 200.00 money
    well spent.

What were your symptoms before you touched the speed sensor? I'm having hard starts, whether hot or cold, yet it runs fine immediately after starting. Someone suggested it might be the speed sensor, but I have no error code. Can a bad speed sensor cause only starting problems, but have no other sypmtoms when running?

My car started OK, but had an intermittent miss that I couldn't diagnose. Since my speed sensor was one of the early ones that everybody says will eventually fail anyway, I decided to replace it. Since I haven't yet done the replacement properly (just stuck it in place to get the car running to put it on ramps to lower the trans to replace the @#$%^&& bracket I broke) I can't tell you yet whether or not the new sensor fixed the problem. Sorry.
