new to me 73 p180 es-some questions 1800 1973

I just purchased a 73 1800es. I know little about these cars. Actually I was looking for parts on Ebay for my 78 242 when I happened across the auction. Yes-it was an impulse buy, but hopefully will prove fruitful. Anyway, the fuel injection has been replaced with a carburator. Is that a typical change? Any pointers to a new P1800 owner. I am under the impression (this based on my 242) that P1800s are basic, easy to work on cars. Am I wrong?

    Bob,

In addition to the links steve provided, you will definitely want to check out:
    http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/1800list/

The Electronic Fuel Injection system originally in your '73 was the Bosch D-jet.
There are advocates of both D-jet EFI and carbs.
There are advocates of both the Dual S.U. carbs and the single Weber carb setups.
You must have a Weber, since you refer, singularly, to "a carburator".

I like both, and have S.U.'s in my '67 122, but, after one year of tinkering, cleaning up electrical connections, fixing vacuum leaks (in hoses, fittings and gaskets), I consider myself (a very slow mechanic and) very lucky to have a fully functional D-jet system in the '72 ES.

By the way, keep in mind that, as well as 1800's and 122's sharing many suspension and mechanical parts, your '73 ES also interchanges with parts for the 140 series. This can help in finding parts.

They are pretty easy to work on. The switch to carbs is common. Check out these websites for some good information-

    http://vclassics.com (lots of tech articles)
    http://1800philes.com (manuals and brochures)
    http://volvo1800pictures.com (photos of stock cars)
    Good luck with the car.
