Temp Gauge Rising 200 1978

I've got a '78 262 that has just started to display these symptoms: Running around town, the temp gauge reads right in the middle of the N. When I'm on the highway going up a hill or rise, the temp gauge needle goes just above the N. Coming back down hill it goes back to the middle of the N. Had the radiator flushed and filled last Fall. Could it be the fan clutch starting to go? What's the best way to test for the fan clutch?

I agree with cbolt in that it sounds like the radiator needs to be rodded out. Usually if the temp rises in bumper to bumper but not at highway speeds then your fan clutch is too blame. I would take the radiator out and take it to a radiator shop to be cleaned out. Should set you back about $40 or less. While your in there change the thermostat for good measure. Also I HIGHLY suggest you get a 167*F thermostat instead of the regular 192*F. I run both of these thermostats in my 260's and then needle never moves once it reached the middle of the "N". You want to keep the PRV's (V6) engines as cold as possible since they are all aluminum and will warp at the first sign of over-heating. Although these engine were not known for their performance or toughness they can still run for a very long time if kept COLD and if the maintenance is done on-time. My 79 262C is about to hit 160K on the factory B27F and so far so good (even though the kid before me really treated the car and engine like S&#T). Good Luck with that PRV!!!

    Sincerely,

    A test:

When the situation recurs, turn on the heater fan full blast and move the slide valve to hot. (Open the windows, too) That makes the heater core into a mini-radiator.

If the temp gauge drops, that's an indication that the main radiator has blockage and is not able to remove enough heat. Could also be a water pump problem - I've seen posts about the pump blades being worn away.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

If it's happening at highway speeds, it's not the fan clutch. At those speeds, the car would get plenty of airflow through the radiator even with the fan completely removed. More likely, your radiator has plugged passages, and it can't keep up with cooling your car when it's running at higher RPMs under a load.

Flushing the radiator has no effect on blocked or heavily obstructed tubes.

This seems to be a normal condition, but how steep is the hill and how much does the temp gage move ?
How is the performance otherwise ? the gas economy ? ease of starting ? coolant consumption ?
Your thermostat be be sticking a little.
    Observe the fan operation.
