steering heaviness? 200

Hi all,

Just a lurker here so far but I have a 1990 240DL w/146,000 miles. I can change the oil and belts and so on but there are limits to my mechanical ability. No rust on this car but the steering is starting to feel very heavy and my mechanic says the box may need changing. My question is what sort of repair is needed to fix the steering. There's no noise, just that the steering is heavy from side to side. And it seems to have been getting worse in the last year.

Heavy all the way through from lock to lock? Or does it stiffen up at a certain point and the ease up again as you turn the wheel further in the same direction?

Look for the simple stuff first. Your car came with "permanently lubricated" ball joints and tie rod ends. As we all know, nothing lasts forever. I have lubricated these by poking a tiny hole in the boot and squirting grease in with a syringe. Made a world of difference when the steering got heavy and wouldn't self-center. If your ball joints have been changed and have grease fittings, try giving them a couple of shots of grease. Tis a truly tragic thing to go for big buck repairs when all that is needed is a touch of titrivation.

I second Michael's response. Try changing the fluid first and make sure that the hoses are in good shape, if not then replace them (you will have to anyway if you get a new power steering pump). My 79's have the factory pump and I know they have not been services as good as they should but they still work very good. Also if a power steering pump is needed you can check boneyards if prices for a replacement units are high. Good Luck!

    Sincerely,
