Steering Noise 700 1988

Well, the P.O. of my 1988 744 TIC didn't take the best care of this car, not horrible, but I am doing quite a few fixes. Right now, the steering squeals from the engine compartment when I turn the steering wheel either direction. The squealing subsides and usually completely goes away if I hold the wheel in that turned position. It also makes a noise like pieces of plastic sliding along each other when I turn, but it sounds more like it is coming from the area housing the turn signal switch and what not. I also feel a bit of resistance. But, this is only at low speeds. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Eamon

if you think it is the belt, do the hand test grab it and try to pull on it you shouldnt have to much movement on that belt, and while your at it why not just replace it? mine has always given the symptoms you describe i even replaced the PS pump still the same 80K later nothings changed.
