sucking noise when you turn off the engine, poor gas mileage, hard brake pedal 200

I've had my '87 240 for just 6 months. It has 123,000 mi. I got it at the Goodwill auto auction for $75.00. It was a wreck.
Here is what I have done:

replaced 3 engine mounts, new ball joints
rear brakes
new distributor, wires, and platnum bosch plugs
fixed a vacuum leak that was causing the engine to run rough and lose power
replaced the fuel relay twice
windshield wiper motor

Something is still wrong with it-
it uses three times a such gas as my '93 240 wagon.
It has a hard brake pedal if you brake more than once in a short period of time
It makes a distinctive sucking noise when you turn the engine off.

I assume it must be a vacuum related problem, but don't know what to look for. Has anyone had a car that makes that "sucking" noise?

I would have given the car away 3 months ago if it weren't for brickboard! I want to give this car to my 16 year old son. I'm trying to learn enough to show him that he can learn to fix it himself. I know how to fix computers but this is my first attempt at fixing cars. Thanks in advance.

there is one vacuum line that runs to your brake booster, if you have poor vacuum then this will cause you to have a hard brake pedal. the booster uses vacuum to help you when you brake. Definitley check this line and replace if needed. Easy way to check if booster is bad is to start engine and then disconnect the vacuum line from the booster. The car should stall. Older mechanic taught me this trick. Cheack all your vacuum lines under the hood. it could be that check valve on top of the intake which is connected to the cruise control unit before it enters the firewall.

Found the posts below with a search for "vacuum leak." There was also a post here a few weeks back on checking for leaks in the vacuum bottle under the dash. Good luck

I take it your motor is injected but not turbo'd? (please Lord, let it be un turbo'd!)
Most of your vacuum lines will terminate at the throttle body/intake plenum area, so thats where to start looking for a vacuum leak.

Two ways to check for a vacuum leak. You can visually inspect the suspected hoses or, even better, remove them so you can flex them and check for cracking, splits etc.

Alternatively you can use a spray such as WD40, or lighter refill gas with an aerosol nozzle. Spray the suspected area - if the revs rise slightly then there is a vacuum leak through which this flammable gas is being drawn. Obviously, take care whilst doing this

They probably don't relate to the cited problem, however.

Sounds like vacuum to me too. Good advice in the previous post--find the location of the sucking under the hood--it is under ther hood, right? My guess is brake booster too.

Nice to see fathers and sons still working on cars together. The 240 is a GREAT car to help your son learn how to do-it-yourself. Nothing on it is excessively complex or unforgiving. If you don't already have it, the Bentley book on the 200 series is indispesnsible and worth the $50 bucks or so. It will pay for itself before you're done with the first repair.

And of course, as you've found in the last few months your new friends here on brickboard will offer the best advice. Since we've collectively driven millions upon millions of miles, pretty much every issue has been encountered at least once. Good luck to you!

Thanks for your encouragement. By the way, sons and mothers can work on cars together too....I thought of the brake booster, but my husband made me promise never to do repairs on the brakes, and never to let my son do brake repairs either.

Could the brake booster problem cause poor gas mileage too? Thanks again.

    Sounds like more vacuum leaks.
I guess you have already examined the hose and valve that connect to the
    brake booster...
Get out under the hood and listen the next time someone shuts it down and
you can probably tell where the sucking sound is coming from.

I get the whoosh sound when I turn the engine off too, it seems to come from under the dash in the passenger area. Don't know why but I always assumed it was the cruise control valve or something.

If the sound is coming from under the dash, there's a good chance it could be the vacuum check valve. There are other possibilities, but since this valve is more accessible than the components under the dash, and the fix takes only 15 minutes, it's probably the most practical first step.

The valve is mounted on the intake manifold. Here's a picture showing the part in the foreground, and where it's mounted is circled in red in the background:
Before removing the valve, take note of which end connects toward the intake manifold. Once removed, try blowing first into the end that connected to the intake manifold. It should not allow air to pass, but I'm betting that yours will.

Hold the valve under a tap and run hot water through it (a bit in both directions) for several minutes. This should clean it out, and allow the diaphragm to reform and seal correctly. Try blowing into it again to check, and it should seal now. If so, re-install, and you should be good to go. Mines held for about a year now.

If this doesn't fix your problem, you'll have to take the celnter console side covers off and trace the line from the check valve into the vacuum tank from the passenger side, or out of the vacuum tank on the driver's side and onto the vent controls on the console front panel.
