Coolant Overflow Bottle 200

I noticed a hole in the engine coolant bottle of my 1992 240 the other day. Is this a problem?

There is a metal strap arrangement that holds the plastic bottle secure. The hole is right there on top where the strap crosses. I'm not sure how big it is because it seems to be partially covered by the metal strap. The part of the hole I can see is half-moon shaped and about a half inch long. It may be bigger if it continues under the metal (I haven't yet loosened the thing to check).

Now, I'm just an English major, but aren't car cooling systems pressuzized? And, if so, wouldn't this tend to mess up the pressure? I have never driven this car in hot weather. I picked it up last winter and it's still relatively cool here in Northern Wisconsin. No evidence of any overheating yet -- the needle on the coolant guage always moves about half way up and then stays there.

FCP Groton wants $24 for part # 9142000, which they call an "expansion tank," and I'm assuming that's the thing I'm talking about. Seems like a lot for what's essentially a glorified plastic milk jug. In fact, it's probably made from recycled plastic milk jugs. On the other hand, it's a cheap fix to head off a potential overheating problem.

Advice?

Pete

If it is a hole and you ever get down to the Twin Cities area, look me up and we can go to a good pick-n-pull we have here (corbomight@excite.com). The yard doesn't always have a great Volvo selection, but they always have at least a couple and the failure rate on those tanks must be low because they always seem to still be there when most everything else is gone. You will probably find some other handy parts too.

I always assumed those depressions in plastic items were for machinery to use to hold and orient them in the manufacturing process.

The "hole" you're talking about isn't a hole at all, just a deep round "depression"... There's a corresponding one on the bottom as well, actually. What the reason for this design is, I couldn't guess, but rest assured they're all like that.

but what if there's a hole in the depression? 200 1980

...Not that I really think there is...

But I /have/ been puzzled by an occasional coolant leak that collects in that conical "depression" under the metal strap & drips down the sides of the tank and fender as well. No evidence of it coming from the pressure cap or either of the two hose fittings.

On a long trip a couple years ago, there would be enough dripping on the pavement after a long fast cruise that I got in the habit of momentarily cracking the pressure cap when I parked to release the pressure and avoid leaving a puddle. For some reason, I haven't noticed this much since -- until just a couple of days ago.

Presumably, the hole in question isn't really a hole -- just a structural support. So then, where's the coolant seeping out of?

Something else to grab from the junk yard someday.

Certainly possible- plastic does degrade after awhile. Easy enough to check, I guess. The strap's held with an 8mm (?) bolt. He didn't mention any leaking, though...

If it is busted, it's an easy fix to say the least- as far as I know, they were the same 1975-93.

Correct on all accounts. System should be pressurized to raise the boiling point of the coolant. A new one's not free, but... not really expensive, either. Try holding 220F water in a milk jug at 5-7 psi day in and day out, with 150 degree ambient air and a lot of vibration.

If it's a small hole, then I would try an epoxy repair, and pad the offending strap with some bicycle inner tube or similar so it won't happen again.

Certainly it should pressurise, and a failure to would cause overheating. It must be a very rare fault - I've never had one with a hole. I used to have a shelf full of spares I was keeping for no obvious reason, but I've thrown all but one away now. Wrong side of the Atlantic for you though anyway.
I'd try a scrap yard. Check the pressure cap too - I have had several fail.

If the car is not overheating and you are not loosing coolant, I would not worry about it. By the way, when my expansion tank developed a crack (previous owner told me about this, luckily), I got a 740 tank from the scrap yard to replace it. It will fit easily...
