Best way to polish windscreen?? 200

The windscreen is just getting very rough right now with the wipers having trouble moving through the sweeps. It makes a horrible stuttering movement everytime especially in intermitent mode. Anyone know of the best method to make them smooth once more? The blades seem fine with just replaced silicone ones. The old rubber ones were much worse. Thanks.

If it is only a film of grime, a tube of toothpaste as a polishing agent applied with a cloth may be enough. It would certainly not hurt anything, and if it does not work you can still contemplate more involved/expensive options.

I had a similar experience recently. My driver-side wiper didn't wipe evenly in spite of brand-new Bosch blades. On a hunch I bought a used set of 240 wiper arms from a fellow BBer. Turns out my old arm was slightly bent, so I replaced it with the "new" one and now it wipes perfectly. All it needs now is a fresh coat of black paint to make them look new.

The risk of buying used arms is that they also may be bent. FCP Groton has them for a decent price - It probably makes more sense to buy new ones:

Wiper blades must be perpendicular to the windsheild to operate quietly and cleanly. Often over a period of time the arms may become twisted and this positions the rubber blade to drag in one direction but chatters in the other. This is common in colder climates when the wipers are switched on but the blade is frozen to the windsheild.

It is simple to adjust it straight again. Use two adjustable wrenches to grab the flat of the wiper arm and turn the other wrench to twist the arm straight again. Test by letting the wiper rest on the glass and looking for as close to a perfect 90 degree as possible.

I had went on a trip and the bugs where bugging my windshield baddly.
At a rest area I sprayed some window cleaner on it and used a green scouring pad(it's all I had to work with) needless to say the plastic sheeting on my window did not fair well, against the scouring pad and got scrached up pretty bad.
I used MIGUIRES cleaner wax, in a red bottel with lots of elbo grease. Working from top to bottom in a stright up and down sweep. It got rid of the deep scraches. I once used a real buffer on a VOLVO window and the plastic is not strong enuff for that type of polishing but by hand is OK.

My brother polished the original/pitted windsheild on his and was happy with the results. I don't know what compound he used though. I do know that he applied & polished with an electric buffer and a lot of elbow grease. This is not a quick & easy opperation.

If you do decide to replace the windshield, see other posts about using late model glass with the trim already attached. The downside is that you'll loose the chrome trim, but apparently it's a lot quieter and easier to deal with.

When I was still in school my folks replaced mine as a suprise and stuck with the original trim - It's never been attached quite right since then, and the ruber seal is pullig in the corners. If I had it to do over, I would deffinately use the newer part.

If the car still has the original windshield, it's time to replace it. I had mine done years ago at a local shop for only about $135 total. One of the best things I ever did! Wipers have worked perfectly since then, and the view is oh-so-much clearer.

Use newspaper on the window.

Also, make sure the wiper arms aren't bent improperly. That can cause horrible chattering.

And make sure the wipers aren't duct taped together like mine.

I think you should start out by first cleaning the windshield (yes, Dallas TX) well. You can buy special compounds here in the States for polishing the glass, but I'm guessing you don't need to do that. Unless you have streaks (most often caused when the wife continues to use the wiper after the rubber has fallen off) that won't clean out, I wouldn't go that route. I think you need new wiper refills (make sure you get the exact ones the arms were designed for) and perhaps the wiper arm need realignment. As a temporary fix, you can reverse the refills and that sometimes helps.
