transmission problems 200 1987

I have an '87 240 automatic wagon. When I shift into reverse, it sounds like when you're going up a roller coaster, clicking and rattling. The car moves smoothly in reverse, but still makes the noise. Today when I was driving it, I couldn't get it to go into park, and sometimes when it was in drive it would rattle a little. It is leaking transmission fluid. When I bought the car, the guy who I bought it from had put a new transmission in it but needed to have a seal fixed or something that didn't really affect the way the transmission worked. I need to know if this is something I can fix myself (I'm moderately mechanical) or if I should take it to a transmission shop ($$$!). Thanks in advance for your input.

My 89, 245 began life with an auto. Had the initial same prob your having....rattle,rattle, clink, clank...in reverse. One day it refused to go anywhere in reverse.......unless I put the RPM"s up to 5500+. Then it would only creep, on level graound. Lived with it for several months (chose parking spot well !!). Then it decided not to shift from 2nd to 3rd.......unless I got up to 65 +MPH.

Changing filter, flushing fluid, adjusting kick down cable, etc., did nothing to improve it.

Out with the auto and in with the M-47, 5 speed. It was like having a new car. Very happy with M 47 !!!

Have you checked the transmission fluid level?

Have you checked the adjustment on the shifter linkage?

    Todd :-)

when I started having the problem, when it was just rattling in reverse I checked the fluid level. It was way low. So I put more fluid in (which is kind of a losing battle because of the leak), and it only got worse after that. I have not checked the linkage. I do not know how to do that. I'm thinking that could be the problem as it runs fine, and when in drive shifts through all of the gears including overdrive smoothly. I'm just afraid of getting stranded on my 50 mile 1-way drive to work each day! Any suggestions regarding the linkage? I'll check my repair manual for clues too. Thanks!
