The foam donut behind the compressor clutch - what is it? 900 1994

I made another post on this subject - but a follow up question, please.

Found that the 10mm bolt was gone on the clutch (came off in my hand). While it was off - I was checking it out and found a deteriorated foam donut (falling out).

I left it out (pretty bad shape)and put the clutch back on. All seems to be working fine with the new bolt and lock washer.

What is this for and is it important?

Thanks

If you're talking about the quarter-sized thing, it's there to keep debris away from the compressor seal. Not real important, an A/C tech told me they often leave them out on rebuilds.

That very well may be what it is for. It is about 2" across, though - and is a felt ring. Feeling inside the front of the compressor with the clutch off - I can feel a circular slot that it should/would fit into.

I was thinking that it might be a noise reducer of sorts - to quiet the magnets pulling it all together rapidly - but your response makes more sense.

      Thanks
