Anybody got a source for the lamps that illuminate the instrument cluster? The ones on my '89 are halogen and burnt out. Bought an '86 cluster from a junkyard only to find that the bulbs on that one are conventional and have a bigger base.

Is your cluster a K10042? Mine are both 88s with K10042s, and they both use the conventional bulb. If you've got a K10042 maybe you can pull one of the sockets out of the boneyard to switch to the conventional bulb. As I recall, the rating of the off-the-shelf bulbs that I used as replacements were slightly higher than the OEM. It definitely was brighter after I replaced the two bulbs, so I'd be happy with that arrangement over the hassle of hard-to-find halogens.

I believe those lights should be an off the shelf item at most auto parts stores. I know the ones on my 86 are.

Well, I think the 86's might be--as I said, they're different from the ones on the '89--but anyway my local parts places say they look like a dealer-only item, and I'm a good hour and a half away from the nearest dealer.

Those little halogen bulbs are PITA to find. The bulb is an OSRAM 12/3 halogen bulb. You're best bet would be to check out an import parts/automotive store. I know that the AutoZone's, Discount Auto Parts, and PepBoys don't carry them. The dealer wanted like $15 per bulb. As far as I know, it's very hard to pry the bulb away from the reddish-brown socket.

If you try: http://catalog.alloemvolvoparts.com, they have them listed. Select your '89 240, and then in the search field type "bulb" then you'll see "Instrument lighting bulbs..." with a picture of the one you need.

Unfortunately, the list price is $10.21 and their price is $11.58.

Just remember that you need to order at least $50.00 worth of merch or else you'll be charged for shipping... perhaps it's a good time to do a tune-up?

        Hope this helps...

Thanks for the lead. Faced with the incredible cost of these bulbs, and being cheap by nature, I stuck a small screwdriver into the halogen bulb socket and broke the solder joint so the bulb would come out. Then I soldered a conventional bulb (from my '86 junkyard instrument cluster--removed from its plastic base) to the inner "wings" of the socket. Pretty fragile, but it works for now.
