My New Car!! 200

I just obtained an '84 245 DL for a price I dare not disclose. 136k miles! After driving it home, I realized it drives much better than my 244 turbo. Of course, the turbo has lots of goodies that the DL doesn't. The Virgos will go on the wagon as will a few other trim pieces (grill, headlight surround, turn signal assy. are broken on the DL).
My questions are whether or not I can put the power windows in the DL. I'd rather exchange guts rather than doors, as I don't want to have to paint anything. Will the electrical system handle the load?
AC compressor on the DL is frozen and the same unit on the turbo is fine and has been converted to 134a. Other than some skinned knuckles from labor and maybe a receiver-dryer, I should be okay there.
I don't want to strip the turbo completely as I'd like to sell it as a drivable vehicle. Any sway bars or other handling goodies are not in question. The DL handles as well as my wife will need.
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

Congrats with your new car! I am sure it will serve you well. If you should need the wiring diagrams for the power windows, look no further:

I don't think that the car is pre-wired for the power windows, at least none of the DL's I have seen were pre-wired. As long as you have a pic-n-pull near by you can always yank out the entire power window system (including the door panels in you color and arm rests w/buttons if your lucky) out of a GL model. As far as the Cruise Control the 91-93 should of been the only years that were pre-wired for the cruise control. Like the power windows you can also uank everything you need out of a junker to add to your DL. If I'm mistaken on my information, ANYONE please feel free to correct me. Good Luck!

Sincerely,

My New Car!! 200

Hi mark,
i installed a complete set of p/w in my 86 245. i pulled the wiring harness w/ relays from a 93 245, and i had 3 p/w regulators & motors from a "bulk sale" on ebay, and i bought the final (drivers side) p/w mot & reg separately on ebay ($25 +shipping--good deal).

electrical system can handle the load. you will need to run some of the wiring underneath some of the carpet. total job = 3-4 hrs at least, but worth it. no painting required. very simple stuff, but a little labor-intensive-running wires every where.

you will need the swiches for all 4 drs (for me $10 +shpg-ebay) and the arm rests, too.

you will need to get this stuff over time to find a good deal--took me 3-4 months for the complete set, but i saved money.

you will need to take the door panels off--but carefully--write me if you need instruction.

you will need the harness with the relay, too, find one at your local junk yard from a gl model or late 240 model.

i did my windows a few months back & i checked for rust in the doors & put on newer door panes and put in speaker wiring for the back door speakers.

regards,

My brother added power windows to his '82 245 DL, so I know it can be done. That was a long time ago, so I don't remember how big a POA the operation was.

The wiring should be there to add the power windows. Check the 245. Easiest way is to follow the wires from the 244 and see just where they are connected to the main harness....see if you have a match in the 245. All the mount points should be in the doors of the 245...again check. It will be a bit time consuming, but worth it in the end. It may be easier just to swap all the window guts from one to the other.

Happy knuckle busting.

Thanks for the tip. I'll go out and do some looking this afternoon. I forgot to ask if the cruise control is pre wired. I know the brain is behind the glovebox and I'm wondering if I can take apart the cable assy. from a turbo and fit it onto the NA. Maybe just an aftermarket unit from JC Whitney?

While your checking for pre wire to the power windows, you may also find the pre wire for the cruise control. Can't say 100%, but generally the wire harness' are generic for a series. More cost effective if the harness' are the same and the manufacture just doen't have to plug in the missing accessory. Not always true, but in most cases.

Hope they are there.
