Air filters 900

I seem to have two air filters on my 95 960. One is the flat standard on the drivers side front. The second is a round cylinder type, on the passengers side, and has a breather pipe on it. What is the second filter for? At what interval should it be changed? Thanks guys, you're the best!

Not a filter. Its the secondary air pump. It pumps air into the catalytic converter when it needs extra oxygen to work properly (on start-up or in certain instances when you come to a stop). This is the noise you hear on start-up that sounds like a muffled siren. It doesn't have a filter in it.

Thanks for the reply. There is a fitting toward the wheen on the air pump. When this is removed, there is a paper, accordian, round cardboard filter there, which can be removed. If it is the pump, there is a filter on it. Anybody know the cost of the filter and the change frequency? Thanks, a pile guys

        Interesting!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've never seen any mention of that filter is the owner's manual or my shop manuals. I'll have to take the pipe off mine and see if there is one on my car.

Thanks for the response. The filter is visible by twisting the housing. The approx 6 inch diameter cap on the filter housing near the passenger side fender twists and comes off. Then the paper filter is clearly visible.

If there is a filter there at all I would just leave it alone. Even if totally plugged (and I doubt that) it will make absolutely no difference to the running or performance of the car. The sole purpose of that pump (it only runs for a minute or two shortly after a cold start) is to pump a bit of extra air into the manifold and thereby help the cat heat up a bit faster. It's benefit is inconsquential. It's just one of those keep the environmentalist whackos happy things.
