headlight lens 1988 volvo 240 dl 200 1988

Just posted a message that should have been for a 1988 Volvo 240 dl. Is it possible to replace the headlight lens without removing the entire headlight assembly.

I'm with the last post, carefully. The seal is likely bad around the plastic. Gently pull and use a flat screw driver to break it free. But be sure to reseal it with a clear cualk when you put it back together.

Yes, if you're careful. But you'll have to glue it back together.

Is it because it has yellowed? You can remove most of the yellowing with oven cleaner and fine steel wool.

Yes, it is because of yellowing. As far as I can tell, the whole assembly is fine except for the yellowing. The last time I had it inspected at the Volvo dealer, they said that it just barely passed the candlepower test. I assumed that the lens would have to be replaced. If what you say is true, maybe I can get rid of the yellowing. What kind of oven cleaner did you use? I was thinking of trying some polishing compound, but was reluctant until I tried to find out from others about the yellowing. Any help is appreciated as it is getting close to time for inspection. Thanks!

When you get the cover off of the assembly, be really careful if you try to clean the reflective silver coating on the bulb side of the lamp. The stuff will flake off very easily.
