Chromed Fresh Air Grill 120-130

We all know that the fresh air grill for the Amazon is made of polished aluminum, but I recently found one that was originally chromed and much heavier than the aluminum one. It was heavily rusted, but after rechroming it looks super.

I am told that some of the early Amazons came with the chromed fresh air grill. Can any of you confirm what model years had this chromed fresh air grill?

Thanks for your help.

Chromed Fresh Air Grill 120-130 1960

My 1960 Amazon-S is a North American model and has the polished aluminum air intake. I have seen 4 European Amazons; 2 '57s from Sweden, a '60 and '61 in Holland and they all had the aluminum intakes. I'd say the chromed version was either a rare option (some early European Amazons had leather interiors) or a parts or materials shortage forced Volvo to use the chrome version in very limited supply.

    Jerry,
The chrome sounds great, but if you want to stick with the aluminum, I found a guy in the Seattle area that is a magician in restoring trim. Aluminum, when polished correctly, can be restored to an amazing gloss finish. He has saved me hundreds of $$$ by restoring the original trim on my 67 122S, both alum. & S.S.
He has his own shop and can turn stuff into a thing of beauty that most people, me included, would typically throw away. If you are interested, let me know.

      Altuna,

Yes, I am interested. Please tell me how to contact this magician. Thanks.

A few months ago I purchased a set of dented up hubcaps from a junkyard cheap, and then I went to the book store and picked up a great book called How to Restore Metal Auto Trim. It is a pretty thin book, but it covers all of the information you need to do a great job on most any trim. The only tools needed are some hammers, a fine file, a marker, a buffing wheel, and assorted compounds. I put some buffing wheels on my grinderm but grinder did not get fast enough to make quick work out of the Stainless, but with some patience I was able to make some really good looking hubcaps.

Another option is to straighten the metal yourself (all detailed in the book) then take your pieces to a chrome shop (or some such place) and have them buff out all of your scratch marks.

I highly recommend this book to folks who are interested in repairing their trim.

If you are talking about the 2 front grills, my 64 wagon is like that. Has a detachable aluminum horizontal bar and a flat punched steel grill piece. I think that design may have run through 65. Shayne Green's 64 wagon (Radio Flyer) is like mine. I think the steel was originals a satin finish. The 66s I have seen look like pressed aluminum.

I've never seen one for an Amazon... is it sorta along the lines of the Jensen P1800 air scoop? SOunds like a good score in any event... would love to see pics!

Maybe they used 'em on the early (pre '62ish) years...
