960 Radiator installation 900 1996

The new radiator arrived yesterday, so I'm going to put it in the 960 (I have been experiencing the dreaded leak from the top radiator hose mount). Are there any tricks or traps to installing a new radiator in the 960 or is it pretty straightforward? This is an OEM style Nissens radiator that is supposed to be drop in fit.

Thanks for the advice!

As long as the number of rows in the replacement is the same, you shouldn't have a problem. However if you try and put a three row in place of the two then that is a different story. A three row will fit but it takes some slight modifications to get it to fit, but IMHO its is worth the work.

Jerry,

Where'd you find a 3-row radiator for a 960?

Thanks, Walt

The local shop I had do the work found the radiator back east, I believe in PA somewhere. The cost at the time was around $250. I still have the radiator as my 960 is no longer running due to broken timing belt. I switched to 940SE's instead.

Thanks Jerry,

Per chance, do you remember the manufacturer of the radiator?

Thanks for the tip. I ordered the OEM two row replacement, and, despite a thunderstorm, got it put in pretty easily tonight (2 hours including cleaning up the spilled fluids). And just in the nick of time--the wife had to put water in it to get home tonight--it had about a 1 1/2 inch crack in the filler neck.

I replaced mine last fall and as I remember it was pretty straight forward. Don't over tighten the clamps on the radiator. "Counter-hold" the transmission cooler adapters at the radiator with a wrench when tightening the cooler lines.
