'89 240 No Spark 200 1989

My '89 wouldn't start yesterday. I have a B230F with what I believe is a chrysler ignition. I have a Haynes manual and the distributor that I have matches the Chrysler. I have no spark to the plugs. I checked the coil primary and secondary resistance and it is fine. I will check the coil wire next, but after that, I have no idea where to go from there. My distributor doesn't have a harness attached to it, so I can't check it without removing it. I have never had a problem with this car, it just wouldn't start yesterday after running fine
all morning. Any suggestions?

it is not a chyrsler ignition, those stopped in 88 with the lh 2.2.

if you crank the car, does the fuel pump run? do the injectors pulse? if so, then you need the ignition amp. if not, then you need to look further. a bad speed sensor is likely, but the lh 2.4 ecu is possible. it's supposed to ground the fuel pump relay while cranking. good luck, chuck.

The fuel pump runs, and I jumped the #4 and #6 fuses while cranking, and no start. How do I check the rpm sensor? Still no spark from the coil. And how and where do I check the ECU?

Chuck is right- and the 89 is known for the crank position (speed) sensor having faulty wire insulation.

You can also try the primitive OBD - push button tests. There's one test in mode "3" on the ignition side to determine sensor output. Also, the code set might tell you the same thing. Check out the 700-900 FAQs regarding this sensor. Same motor, just different distributor.

Read more in the FAQs about physically changing the sensor. If you snap the delicate bracket, you'll be dropping the tranny. I'm sure there are a few folks bitter about that experience. There should also be some reference about a yellow tape or mark on the sensor's cable as a means of identifying the assemblies likely to be faulty.

if the fuel pump runs WITHOUT the jumper, then the speed sensor is not the problem.

only way to really check the speed sensor is with a scope. otherwise, buy a new 1 and cross your fingers. good luck, chuck.

Exactly...I tell everybody...if you've no spark and the fuel pumps run...it's the power stage.

Way of the subject, but hi Chuck, so you know...my customers in Orlando got there car started by jumping it off...she admits the battery was fine when she first started trying to start it, but you know how it is...that jump just fixed it...
