No acceleration and high temperature when its hot outside. 200 1990

My 1990 240DL has really bad acceleration, it has 114,000 miles. Both the Volvo dealer and a mecahnic have not been able to help me with this problem. I have put new plugs, rotor and distributer cap. I also put in a new airmass meter, air box thermostat and a rpm sensor. I also had the throttle body cleaned and nothing. It just has no pick and wants to coke itself out when I start it up, the mechanic said that its just the way this car is(I don't believe this).
Could the engine coolant temerature sensor and the oxygen sensor have anything to do with it? Please give any suggestions that I can try. I love this car.

I'm going to agree with everyone here as far as checking the catalytic convertor for low or no flow, remember a muffler with broken baffles will also create an exhaust restriction.

The first thing I'm gonna ask you to do is start the car, and pull the fuse for the pre-pump and see if it makes any difference in a) how the car runs, and b) the noise level of the hum of the main pump.

Hot weather really does make a weak pre-pump show it's ass.

Question number two, when you accelerate, I mean really accelerate put the pedal to the floor, does your transmission downshift well to allow you to speed up, or does it kinda down shift once and blahhhhhh itself a little faster? A detent cable can look fine up top at the throttle linkage, and still be broken inside the tranny.

    Just a few questions...

    Chris

Check the compression. If it is high (>180 lbs), there is probably carbon build-up in the head. This requires removing the head and scrapping the carbon away to fix the problem. Or, try, at your own risk, the water injection method detailed in the 700-900 FAQ. In the mean time, giving the timing 4 degrees more advance will help the acceleration. jp

Yes a failed CTS could cause it to run too rich. Possibly O2 sensor also.

    Other things to check:

    Partially clogged fuel filter
Low fuel pressure caused by failing main or in-tank pumps
High fuel pressure caused by failed FP regulator.

    Retarded ignition timing.
Corroded / bad dist cap and rotor

I agree you might want to check for a clogged cat at some point in the process.

Another you said was that it wanted to 'coke out' every time you started it. My car used to die when it was cold when shifting out of first gear. After the injectors were flushed out, it ran a lot better and the engine idled better. Check the cat for sure, and it doesn't hurt to have the injectors flushed. Other real easy things to check are the fuel filter and air filter.

It sounds like it may be a plugged cat. Why don't you unscrew the upstream bung on the cat and see if that helps. It'll be loud, but if the power picks up, you'll know the problem.

Do you mean a catalytic converter? I am not sure what a upstream bung on the cat means?

Yes - I mean the catalytic converter. The upstream bung is a pipe plug that screws into the cat in the general vacinity of the O2 sensor. If you remove this plug, you allow some of the exhause to bypass the cat. If the engine runs better, you can assume that a blockage exists downstream of the plug. A good guess would be a plugged cat.

      How do you do this?
