Buzzing sound under car 200 1986

First post on this board. Volvo owner, exclusively, since 1980. Just purchasd 1986 245 for my daughter and looks good but needs some updating. The car starts right up but after 4-5 minutes at idle starts buzzing down under. Took it in and mechanic said new fuel pump, the pump was getting very hot. Now I was reading this thread last week where someone was saying they had a similar problem and thought it was the in tank sender making the buzz. My question is would the in-tank not working cause the main pump to be hot? The mechanic is not deep volvo but has performed decent work in the past. How hard a job is this to swap out on your own? Done plugs and oil in the past. Thats it. Thanks.

The main fuel pump in front of the gas tank could be buzzing because the fuel pressure regulator located at the end of the fuel rail on the engine is malfunctioning (holding too much back pressure against the fuel pump. Take the return fuel hose loose at the regulator and attach a short hose going into a jar or can. Start the engine and see if there is a good flow of fuel out of the regulator. If the main fuel filter located by the main fuel pump wasn't been changed in the last 2-3 years or 30k miles, it is probably time. There is a hollow bolt that attaches the fuel line to the filter. The main pump and filter swing down from the frame to give better access. jp

Although it might seem intimidating, both the in-tank pump and the main pump are easy enough to do yourself. I started out doing just my oil and plugs too, but with the help of a manual and no real pressure to get the job done in a fixed amount of time, I have moved on to doing larger jobs like the in-tank and main pumps. The first time you try it, expect it to take a good few hours. I've always found my car to be fussy, and she doesn't like it if I spend less than two hours on her. Not because things are difficult, but because there's always a couple little things that trip me up. So, don't be afraid to do it yourself. Hope this helps, and be sure to post any questions you have.

I'm just in the process of replacing my in tank pump. When my tank is full there is no noise from the main pump. At half full the main pump buzzes. At less than 1/4 tank the car starts bucking. I've bought the pump upgrade and will let you know if it gets rid of the buzzing noise. My in tank pump hasn't worked for at least three years.

My intank pump is gone, but so is my odometer, trip meter and fuel gauge. If I didn't have that main pump getting louder, I wouldn't know how much fuel I had on board. It's been like that since feb and i haven't run out of fuel yet.

If the in-tank fuel pump is not working it will over-work the main pump causing it to overheat. There is also a sock filter in the tank that if clogged could cause a problem. Take off the gas cap and insert a hose down it and put your ear up to it and see if slight buzzing in the tank. If so, your in-tank fuel pump is working. Also consider new fuel filter. I would check these before investing in expense of main fuel pump.

    Hope this helps.
