intermittent starting 3 days with no success 700 1990

My 1990 740 GL stalled and wouldnt restart. It has been taking a few cranks to start and then it just wouldnt restart. It will start with Carb cleaner in the throttle body, but runs really roughly and still stalls.

It has started twice, but the only thing we did was touch the TP sensor and it checks out fine. There is pulse to the injectors and they work during the self diagnostic. The self diagnostic shows nothing wrong. You can hear the fuel pump starting when the key is on.We have fuel to the fuel rail and spark at the spark plugs, but no fuel on the plugs. The injectors look fine, but what are the chances of all 4 going bad at the same time not letting any fuel at all to the plugs.

Two fuses had been melted into the fuse box and after rewiring them # 11 (which runs the fuel pump) blew once, but has been fine since. We traced most of the wiring to that fuse and it doesnt look corroded. We replaced the crankshaft sensor as the old one had more resistance than a new one, but no difference. The ECU's look good, no corrosion, but we dont have a tester for that and that wouldn't be intermittent anyway right? the fuel relay warms up when we did get it started.

Could the fuel pump be wearing down and demanding more power and screwing with the wiring? What does the PSI need to be at the fuel rail and is there a way to check that? Could the pump be running and generating pressure, but not enough to get the fuel atomized at the injectors? How do I know if I have one pump or two?

Thanks for your time,

Sarah

There is something called the "Radio Suppression" relay (don't ask) that controls power to all 4 injectors. But I am not yet familiar enough on 700/900 to tell you where it is on your '90. Some years have an identical Fan Relay that is swappable.

Check the 700/900 FAQ (Drop-Down FEATURES menu) for more info, or do a search on this relay. Hopefully someone with more solid tips will ring in soon.

Just reread your final comment "How do I know if I have one pump or two?" If you have the regular cylindrical Bosch coil, you have 2 pumps. If the coil looks weird, on the left inner fender, you have The REX (ignition) and Regina (FI) with just one pump.

A Gauge must be '"Tee'd in" at the fuel rail to test pressure. But you can raise it by 9# or so by pulling and plugging the vacuum hose on the FP Regulator. (BTW, any sign of gas in that hose means a bad FPR.)

      Hi Bruce...

heading the same way you are...on a 760GLE there are two suppression relays, both on the passenger side by the coolant jug. One is spark, one is injector pulse. Kicked my fanny on one 1990 760...yes it did! I had lost spark, and operating on what I know, instead of looking up what I didn't know, I replaced two pain in the ass crank sensors to no avail...it was the flippin' friggin' relay that is oh-so-easy to get to.

oops...just why did I have 760 in my head? I still had my brain on another post...yep...you have a suppression relay, on a 1990 Regina car, you have two on the coolant reservoir (one for the fan, one for the injector pulse) swap 'em and see.

Thanks guys...I will definately let you know if that works on Tuesday when I get a chance to look at it again. It is Regina.

"swap 'em and see." Can they switch out with each other? or do you mean buy new ones?

Any comments on the fuel pump PSI? or does that seem like it couldnt be the problem?

You can switch them out with each other...but as I see from your subsequent post,it seems to be working...

You said, "the fuel pump relay warms up when you get the car running...now that you can't get it started, is it clicking? If it is clicking, and the car still won't start...smack the %$#*&^% out of the fuel tank about 8 inches from where you fill it toward the center of the car...now see if it will start...

even if it doesn't, you relieved some frustration

            Chris

Sorry ..I just read Bruces comments on the PSI. We did take the hose off the regulator with no change and no sign of gas. Also when you run the self diagnostic on the fuel system, that "Radio Suppresion" relay by the coolant seems to be clicking nicely, as does the Cold Start Valve which showed up one time on the diagnosic as a problem, but didnt ever after that.

            Thanks again
            Sarah
