What did you pay for your last bumper 444-544

So. I live in Tempe, AZ and there are no Volvo parts places around here (also very few people who work on old Volvos or even know what they are). The closest place is Revolvo in Tuscon and after calling them I decided a trek down to the junkyard in the desert was in order. So I jet down there one Friday after work and manage to dig a fairly good PV444 front bumper out of the heap, shocking the guys at the desk who said 'those don't exist.'

Here's what I paid for it:
$150 for a front bumper (3 pieces and overrider bar), in need of chrome, with only a few slight dents
$250 for the chrome job (NuChrome in Tuscon)
$54 for the mounting hardware, bolts and new rubber grommets
gas to get to Tuscon
assuming I can mount it myself, I paid $454 for this bumper

The question is, could I have bought a new one for this price? You have to factor in the shipping costs as well. Also, the smell of a good plating house. mmmmmmmmm

I just had mine re-chromed, along with the grille surround. Set me back 2000.00 CDN, so I think you did well.

I lived there for 25 years and saw only two PV's. Not al all surprised at the scarcity of parts or even knowledge that the car ever existed. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal overall. Just recently, a front bumper was on Ebay for about $100 but that is the first and only time I have seen one there over the last year.

Yes, I emailed this fellow who was selling both a front and back bumper right before he put them on ebay. The price was good. And he sent me pictures of his car before and after he removed them. The bumpers were on his (I think it was 57) 444, this is the first picture of a 444 I have seen with the overrider bars on the bumpers. I'm wondering if they came off a 544? Or if the 57's had the overrider bars.

It was a good deal. But then when I saw this bumper in a scrap heap in the junkyard I said...A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush!

Hiya Belinda,

I'd say you might have beat that price by a bit a few years ago when the currency exchange with Sweden was more favorable, but not now -- not for one in truly new condition. Not a bad deal.

Sounds like your doing some good fixing up of that car. How's that cuckoo on the roof... still blinking?

"How's that cuckoo on the roof... still blinking?"

Don't think so, these were discontinued in 1952 for the home market and never mounted on export models...

Belinda got an NOS cuckoo a couple years ago and it's installed on her car. Not correct for the year, but infinitely cool.

Is there a picture of this particular car on the PV-register?

The car is registered on the PV register but no pic.

Maybe when I get a front bumper on it will be worthy of a picture :P

Yes, the cuckoo blinks on!!!
