That one is a bit of a bitch to get out with out the special tools. I have not done one without any one of a number of special tools in 15+ years, can you get on it with the box end of a regular wrench and turn it one flat at a time? A 13mm flex head gear wrench will get in there, a Matco tools 1/4" drive special forces socket on a flex head wratchet to match will get in there, a Snap-on low clearance socket with an angled wratchet wrench will do it, and I think that you can break it loose with a simple 1/4" wobbley socket and long extension but you cant spin it out with it. Once it is broken free you can get it the rest of the way out with a regular combination wrench.

If you mean the manifold to exhaust pipe nut you will need a swivel and long extension. No need to take it of, just unbolt manifold from head and it will tilt away with plenty of room.

If you mean the manifold to head nut you should only need a socket wrench, can't remember ever having any trouble with that nut.

Sure sounds like a bad head gasket. Overheat?
