Tire wear & Front wheel alignment ?? 200

hi.. I've noticed a few things about my volvo front suspension. It pulls to the right pretty consistantly.. the tires are wearing unevenly on the outer edges. I'm wondering what type of front alignment might need adjusting (what's typical on 240's) and where do you guys go for a front end alignment? Volvo? Tire Kingdom? Local shop? thanks for info!

OK, thanks for the ideas.. I will climb under and check things out. I think I remember seeing a torn ball joint boot. And I doubt the front bearings have ever been adjusted. There are some specialty shops reccommended by tire rack, maybe I'll check them out for alignment. There's also a shimmy when I apply the brakes, so I'm going to be swapping out the rotors. Thanks again.

Before taking it somewhere, check for worn parts. Jack up the front end on one side and check out the steering linkage for play by grapping the tire at the 3:00 and 9:00 o'clock position and wiggle in and out (use some force). It works best if one person does the wiggling and another crawls under the front end and watches the tie rod ends for movement. Then do the same thing only grapping the tire at 12:00 and 6:00. Watch the ball joint for movement. If there is movement right at the wheel spindle, the wheel bearing needs adjusting. I like doing my own alignment because there are to many rip-off artist and idots out there it the business. jp

Never EVER go to tire kingdom! They are rip off artists. I had to go to court to give a friend some moral support in a law suit, and guess who's sitting behind me??? the tire kingdom manager I had to demand my alignment money from after a failed ripp off scam attempt on my girl's honda! Turns out he was being sued for about $2500 by some young lady who he tried to scam...

is it possible this issue is not alignment???

My volvo pulls to the right consistently as well and the previous tires were worn out on the outer edges.

I got them aligned...but they still pull to the right consistently??

Never to the left or anything..just to the right all the time.

Is it possible i didn't get a good alignment job. I took the car back like 3 times and kept on telling them it wasn't aligned..but they said it was another issue. I always got the feeling they were lieing...??

If the inner and outer tie rod ends, ball joints, wheel bearings, top strut mount bearings, and control arm bushing are all good (I assume they are or the alignment shop would tell you so) the steering gear might need adjusting. On my 83 240, the steering gear is made by Cam Gear. It has a cover plate over an eight tab washer. It is adjusted by trial and error. Straighten the bent tab and bend up the tab on either side. Replace the cover plate and test drive. If there is less pull, go another tab in the same direction until it doesn't pull. If worse, obviously, go the other way. Other steering gear manufacturers had other adjustment devices. jp

whats the panhard rod?? I do hear a squeling noise at low speed sudden takeoff:)

I'm assuming it's because my bushings have too much play...but it may be those

Sounds like the toe is out of alignment. Take it in to a shop or DIY like how I do it.

-- Kane ... and the post below that is how to check camber.

Any alignment shop will be able to do your brick. There's nothing out of the ordinary and it's not a difficult thing for them. So don't be afraid to shop around and get the best price, which in my experience is from the alignment and tire shops and not the dealers or full service garages.
