1) What's this car worth? 2) How long do turbos last? 700 1990

I've owned about 8 240's in the last 10-15 yrs but never a 740. I belive mechanical parts-wise they have a great deal in common. I'm looking at a 1990 740 turbo wagon with new tires, new front rotors & pads, rebuilt tranny, new Air Mass Meter, sunroof, leather interior, 185k miles. It has some rust on the lower passenger doors, but otherwise is in good condition. It does need a tie rod end (then alignment). I've looked at Edmunds, NADA, and Kelley Blue Book and have found prices from $800 to $2600. Edmunds knocked off $800 due to the mileage, others $0. I figure to subtract $400 or so for the tie rod end and rust. Can I get some feedback on how much people think this is worth? I'm in Northeast Ohio. Also how long do turbos last, and how to test if the car just seems to run fine? Oil has been changed and car taken care of. What's the cost when they do go? That's my biggest concern. Thanks for the feedback!

Sounds like a good $2000 car - assuming it starts, stops and runs well. The turbo should be good for at least another 50K miles, tie rod end is cheap (around $100 parts and labor). You will probably get another 100k out of the car with just routine maintenance. The 740 series are much better drivers than the 240's in my view.....

Our '90 744 TI has 232,000 miles on it and I think that it is on its original turbo. (We have owned it since 120,000 miles)

    It still runs great.

I am trying to sell it for $1500 - New rotors, pads, sensors and pulse rings, battery, and starter. Absolutely no rust. No alloy wheels. No AC. Bad headliner.

Several people have driven it for a few days and really like it, the mileage scares them away.

The car is worth about $500 plus new parts, minus fixes needed.

No word on value, since it differs so much on region, but given enough care, turbos can last a long time. The major death for 'em is oil coking up in the bearing. This is reduced with more frequent oil changes or using a good synthetic oil and letting the turbo spin down before shutting off the ignition.

I have 206+k miles on my '91 - still original. Others have reported their original turbos going for over 270k.

Rebuilt turbos can be had for a few hundred, labor a few hundred more. Read up on the FAQ, and if the rest of the car checks out as you say, it sounds like a decent one.

Good idea, he's a good source. I've taken my car(s) to Carl a few times, even though it's an hour each direction. To you Northeast Ohioans: take note!

Here in Canada (province of Quebec) a car like that with that mileage can be found for 1000 $cdn to 1500 $cdn. I think if you pay 500 us$ it's a very good deal. The turbo unit on that model seem to be undestructable (with a minimum of care). For maintenance details checks the faq'S.
