I have a 1990 245 Wagon with the M47 II 5-Speed Transmission.
I just got it back and I had the Clutch, Pressure Plate, Release Bearing, Pilot Bearing, Transmission Mount, Clutch Cable and TRANSMISSION replaced. I don't have a problem with the shop that did the work (fairly good price, just took a week).
My Problem is this, the old transmission developed a severe hole in the rear of the case. The morning it went out when I put it into reverse I had to ease out the clutch a bit to try and slide it in. I heard this very hard Clunk sounding like a large metal rod hitting against the metal case. This was not the first time. It happened ever since I bought the car.
After I spent a boatload on getting this thing fixed, I was SO happy to get the brick back. I missed her a GREAT deal. She was doing great. UNTIL..
I went to buy some beers. I came out, put it into Reverse (went right in) except a second later I hear this mild tink. The same sound I heard except much softer and much less forceful. I belive this is what caused the hole in the back of the old transmission (you could also hear the bearings whining and the tranny made all kinds of noise.) This one is SO quiet.
Is this normal for this transmission? I will start doing the put it into 1st-2nd-1st-2nd-5th then reverse from now on if that's what it takes. (It worked on the old one I just never remembered ALL of the time.)
Please advise and help. BTW, the tranny I bought came with a lifetime warranty (seemed like a good piece of insurance at the time for an extra $100 bucks)
