164??? do I dare??

Ok, so I got hooked with the 240's then a 760 turned my head...now I just went and looked at a 1972 164 that is coming up for auction on Sat. It looks very complte it has the twin stromberg carbs (b30a, I think)... and an automatic.

The outside is sanded and primered but still needs a little work. All the trim seems to be there... the inside needs seats and VERY little else...one very small dash crack and the rest is quite pristene... the wood dash is beautiful, The car sits nice and straight/ level and even has some fair tires on it.. (and as always here... 100% rust free)

Ok now with a total of 10 already and the fact this will probablly sell for under $100 (last 2 from same local auction $50 & $75) it would seem like a no brainer...But...

I know the engine parts won't interchange but will a auto trans from a 86 to 93 240 fit? if not, Would a complete B230f swap be too dificult? Or maybe the 16 valve from the 740 I just bought, thats driving me nuts wanting to put it in SOMETHING ???

I'm not sure I want to get into the b30 to deep as I don't have any extras for parts, and I have heard bad things about the 6cyl. engines. I am assuming somethng serious is wrong or it would not be at an abandonded vechicle auction...Of course the last 2 are up and running with just a tune up and some tlc...

I can just picture the wife tooling around in this...But I don't want to buy it if it is going to mean not being able to use parts that I have on hand in the event of something major being wrong.
Thanks as always

I don't have any experience with the Strombergs but the engine itself is practically indestructible. I bought my 75 164 in 1980 and drove it 16 years and never touch the engine as I never had to. The 72's should have alot more power and torque than my 75. Stay with the engine, the BW55 is not near the transmission that the AW70 or AW71 is. It would be alot better if the transmission was a M410 like I have. The 75 was great to drive and had plenty of get and go. Go for it and get the 72. That's my $.02.

Wow thanks for your $.02 you may have changed my mind...I had pretty much talked myself out of another project...I guess it must be the V 6 that gets the bad reviews...Thanks

Well I live in North Texas and have a couple of 75 164s one of which I have to get rid of in my garage. I would rather find it a home than scrap it. If interested let me know.

I had a '69 164 with 269k when I sold it.I wish I never did! Iloved that car and was it fast.the dual strombergs are a pain to balance but other than that it's just like working o na b-20. I had the 4 speed M-400 with the heavy duty clutch. Does the '72 still have the nice under grill bumpers?
Still one of my favorite volvos.

I'm not sure about the bumpers, I'll have to download the pics I took, and see. In reality when I first started getting intrested in volvos the 164 was what I had in mind. The 200's and 700's just seem to keep coming my way...If I get this it will be my first venture into the 100's

dual carbs would be worth quite a bit of hassel just for the cool factor I would think.
Thanks for the response.
