Maintanance like clockwork - amazing 200 1989

Hi all,

I just wanted to emphasize how amazing it is that certain wear-items on our cars seem to last just as long as expected...

So far everything on my 89 240 has lasted just as long (mileage) as expected, the tailshaft bushing, the engine seals, valve cover gasket, in-tank pump, AMM, center driveshaft bearing, timing tensioner, etc... all recently replaced.

Now at 260K kilometers, the rear main seal is leaking. I ordered that, along with a set of front strut bearings expecting to need them soon. This last week both front bearings are "crunching" occasionally when I turn the wheel. Amazing! Great I ordered them so I can do them along with the front strut inserts...

All to stress that given the age and mileage on a car that has not been abused, it really does seem easy to assess what future repairs would be needed and when.

This last year with this car doing 1000Km per week, my planned maintanace has been so exact it's not funny, never surprises... never in need of emergency garage visits. It continues to run like a beauty.

I love this thing, just as much as my immaculate 940 16v...

Thanks!

I envy you, I'd love to just be able to do predictable periodic maintainance.

I got me a really simple maintanance schedule: if it breaks, blows leaks or jams, I fix it. Sometimes fixing it can be as simple as hitting the starter with a hammer until next time, although I try to fix things as properly as I am able.

One day the restoration will be complete, until then I don't mind clutching it out of the carpark at work.

yeah with a little practice you can get a pretty close guess on the actual milage of a 240 just by what's wrong with it or what the owner has just fixed...pretty handy, cause you know the odometer don't work...
