I go out to the car, turn the key, and the windshield wipers start. Moving the control stalk has no effect. They won't stop as long as the key is on. I then found that turning on the headlights and flipping to and from high beams twice, not once, stopped the wipers. Then they worked normally. Next time I started up, same routine. What kind of electrical gremlins do I have? Tried the FAQ. Seems I saw a post about this?

I experience that weird problem's with my 740 89. I found that's coming from a grounded wire between the winshield pump fluid and the headlight. They get ground on the same plug. Just try to make a little clean-up in the corner of the left headlight connection....

Many thanks for the tip. I think you are right. Even though the problem went away, obviously it will come back, so I found the ground connection you described, I think. It's on the inner fender near the left headlight, has two slip-on connectors. Shows marks of having been cleaned up in the past. Also one of the wires is losing its insulation. Gave it a temporary cleaning, will do it right next time I get it off the street where I can work on it.
