740 slushbox stuck in upshift

My 90 740 automatic has been getting "stuck" in upshifts lately, either when I do a gas pedal upshift or use the overdrive switch on the knob. Once it upshifts, it will not go back to the top gear either by pushing the thumbswitch or letting off the gas pedal. Is this a DIY-diagnosable problem?

    Sounds like the kickdown cable is sticking. Go under the hood and see if the kickdown cable is retracting.

      I don't think that it is the cable because the tranny sticks in upshift even when I use the overdrive button on the shifter. Any other suggestions on what to look for?
