Philosophical question? about 'parting out'... 200 1978

What are your thoughts about cannibalising a more-or-less roadworthy '74 164 for the benefit of a more-or-less roadworthy '78 244? Is this okay, or would I be cast out of Vol-halla and doomed to drive a '91 Cavalier for all eternity?

And, is it possible to swap the seats and/or dash from a 164 into a 240? Anybody ever done this?

Ethically - they are your cars and you may do what you want with them.

Philosophically - the whole is made up of its constituitive parts. Your 164 will cease to a 164 and become something qualitatively different - what we might call a parts car

Volvoistically - Volvos are more about utility and simplicity - perhaps making use of your 164 is utilitarian, but if this is the argument, why not the other way around - build your 164 with a 240 part or two.

For good Car-ma - Keep the 164 and restore it or send it to someone who is interested in those cars, which are very cool. Get a 240 parts car or take a few trips to the pick-and-pull.

Actually, I agree on all points- just wondering what you all thought...

And, the 164 in question is essentially hypothetical, so don't worry...:)

The only thing I see wrong with it is that there is litte communality; another 240 would be a more useful scrapper.

Actually, from the firewall back, the two cars *appear* to share the same body- not sure though, I'm no "brixpert"...:)

A '74 ande 78 are actually very different, it rather depends on when the '74 was actually made. However at around that time the car had a major safety upgrade prior to the introduction of the 240, Rear axle was slightly relocated, as was the fuel tank.

Door locks were changed too, it is possible to alter doors to make them fit, but it isn't really worth the hassle.

Apart from that you'd gain npothing much mechanical, steering, brakes, rad, alternator are all completely different

        Regards

        Pete

They pretty much are the same from the windshield back, although, there are differences in places. If you have a specific question on what may or may not be the same, i'd try posting it in the 140/160 section and we might be able to help. In that respect, the 75 164 had more in common with the 240s, although it also had some more, hard to get, specifically 75 only parts i think. What exactly do you want to swap from where to where? I agree with getting another 240 to pull parts from, much better idea i'd say. Especially if the 164 you have is considered roadworthy, gotta save every good last classic bit if we can. =D

        My two cents, peace

FWIW, I also agree about the desirability of stripping a 240 rather than a 140 or 160- both of those cars have a higher "cool factor" than the 240s, IMO, and deserve to be saved if possible, rather than ravaged.

I was basically speaking hypothetically- a buddy of mine has a 164 project he'd unload on me for $500, but I resisted, for his own good...:) No doubt it's a cooler car than my 244, and worthy of resurrection.
