Changed cam timing on the 94 960 900

Over the winter I mentioned that the wifes 92 960 had better accelleration than my 94(just seemed quicker & smoother).Over the weekend I pulled them side by side, popped the timing belt covers and brought them to T.D.C. as if changing the belts.
I spent at least an hour comparing cam positions on both. The method I ended up using was laying a straight edge across the shoulders of the cam bolts,1 on the exhaust and 2 on the intake.the 92 looked as if the bolts had never been touched and the 94 looked like it had been moved at some point. On the 92 there was a 2 mm drop on the center bolt and 94 had about a 5 mm drop.
I finally adjusted the 94 to where the straight edge was even across all 3 bolts top and bottom and then nervously reached for the key to apply ignition.Fired right up.the 94 does seem to be a bit quicker and the smooth idle is even smoother and appears quieter at cruising speed.
I will have to wait to compare both cars ,ie,driving one then the other to get a feel in performance.
There is a cut out on the timing belt cover(the 1 still attached to the egine) over the intake cam pully that has lines and numbers on it and the pulley is lined up perfectly to the cut out.
It worked on mine, so DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK if anyone attemps it.If I had access to the cam timing tool I would certainly have used it,I'm courious now to find out how close I am to nirvana at my backyard adjustment.

dewfpo,I'm sorry but I haven't invested yet in a digital camera,I know pics help alot and what I've done is hard to put in words without getting very long winded.I'll see what I can do.

tjts1,it's hard to tell how much it was really off because I adjusted both cams so I'm not sure which one got adjusted more.I adjusted so the straight edge layed even across the 3 bolts on top and the bottom were also in line, therefore, the cams were parallel with each other and also in line with the angle of engine.I left the 92 alone since I was using it only for reference,it still has the 2mm gap on the center bolt. This can get confusing so take plenty of time and PRE-MARK YOUR BOLT position before making any adjustment so you can go back if need be.I circled mine with a fine tip marker.

I know it's already done, but pictures, if possible help tremendously.

Wow very interesting. When you refer to 2mm vs 5 mm are you talking about intake or exhaust cam? I'll pull to timing belt cover tonight and take a look at my 94. Maybe I'll get a better idea. Maybe the difference is from the factory.
