945 blank headlight bulb position - can this be used? 900

Hi There,

My 'new' 945 has come from Japan with the arrowed bulb position not used. The correct insulated wiring for the positive and return wires are present, but are plugged into each other so as not to show up as an open cct I guess.

I'd like to have a bit more light when driving at night. Can this position be used? What is the bulb type/size you'd put in here?

And importantly, what will activate it? Hi-beam? Fog lights?

Thanks,

Mike

I just installed a set of these e-code headlamps in my '94 940 turbo wagon. The position you have arrowed is for the high beams(the fogs are just below these lamps). They use an H-3 style bulb. On coming drivers would not like to have these lamps lit as they approach. It probably would be better to upgrade the wattage of the main headlamps to get more light on the road, and/or use the fog lamps to fill in with more light output. If you decide to upgrade to higher wattage bulbs make sure the wiring is large enough to handle the added amperage draw. I rewired the headlamp, fog, and high beam circuits with relays to reduce the load on the switches and wiring and get higher voltage to the bulbs. Good luck with your upgrade!

Thanks for the advice John, much appreciated.

Here in NZ we go in for big lights as pretty much any night drive sees you out in the middle of nowhere, you just drive courteously.

I find it strange that my fog lamps only come on with high beam. I'm used to fog lamps illuminating at a low angle with low beam. Is my 940 wired weirdly?

My main lights are dual-beam, is there a place in the world where the high-beam is a totally separate bulb as you've described?

Thanks again,

Mike

Mike,
Here in the US the fog lights only light with the low beams. Our main beam bulbs also have 2 filaments for the high and low beams, but the e-code lamps like yours and mine also have a separate high beam. If you were to install some heavy wiring and a relay to take power directly off of the battery, you could use a 120 watt h-3 bulb. This would definitely light up some road. If you were to do the same upgrade to the high beam portion of the main headlamps, the car would look like a flamethrower with all of the lamps lit. City driving around home here isn't conducive to using bulbs of these high wattage. Normally my headlamps have 100W/80w's as the main high/low bulbs, and 100w's as the straight high beam. The fogs stay at 55w's for my applications, they are mainly used just to add light to the sides of the road and a little fill in the center.
I have enough lighting with these e-code lamps which was not the case with the poor US spec original lamps. As an added bonus the lamps I installed also included the headlamp wipers and washers which will be a huge plus in cleaning off the salt used on the winter roads.
