Adding a Turbo to Manifold gasket on a 740T? 700 1989

I am almost ready to fix my loose turbo to exhaust manifold problem. I have turned the nuts a little at a time, and I don't think I have any studs that risk breaking. (one whole can of PK used, so far) I have most of the caveats studied and the parts I need located. I have two remaining questions that don't seem to be covered in the FAQ's that I hope someone can answer:

On a car with 150K miles, do I need to R&R the exhaust manifold studs? I am not cheap- I just don't want to risk breaking one off.

I have been told that it may be necessary to machine the mating surfaces between the manifold and the turbo housing. If there is no warping or major damage, can I put a gasket in there, and, if so, then where can I get one or make one?
For that matter, why did they not use a gasket in the first place?

thanks in advance

Rick

According to one of the green manuals, you should use some kinda of "matte paste". In my manual, it gives a volvo part number. I don't have it handy right now. that is what is used instead of a gasket.

The exhaust manifold studs are always a good idea to replace on this job as you don't want that last one to break an reinstall. as far as the gasket all of the later turbos, since about '84 have machined mating surfaces that don't require gaskets. if you have an earlier turbo then the dealer should be able to locate a gasket for you.

It was a toss up about risking a stud break on removal from the block, or a break on reinstall. i think I'll replace them all, and thanks

As far as the gasket goes, I have an 89 with a Garrett watercooled. I have seen this same turbo in other cars with a gasket, so I was wondering why Volvo went without a gasket, and could I simply add one in.

Thanks for the explanation about later versions dropping the gasket. My 83 242 had none, yet the parts fiche clearly shows it.
