What brand of rotors? 200 1989

Looking to get my front rotors replaced in the near future, I've been looking at FCP's rotors and found several different brands: ATE, ATE's Power Disc version, Zimmermann, Balo, and of course an OEM/Volvo one. Prices range from $28 for ATE to $59 for the Volvo/OEM one. Most of the brands vary from $28-$36. The PowerDisc is $40 and the OEM one is $59.

Unless I missed it, they didn't carry Brembo - ~$45'ish at alloemvolvoparts.

Anyone have any suggestions? -- Thanks!

Most of the rotors you have listed are OK. One thing to keep in mind is not to let the tire jockey tighten the lugs with his impact wrench. I have seen a brand new set of rotors come straight from the box ruined by someone over tightening the lugs nuts. When you have your tires rotated & balanced make sure that the guys know that if they warp your rotors you are going to come down on them.

    Good Luck

I don't have alot of experience with rotor brands. What I can say is that I bought Zimmerman's from FCP Groton for my 90 240 2 years ago and I have no complaints at all. Others have said good things about Zimmerman's. Believe they are made in Germany, they know something about performance. Might even be a few bucks cheaper than ATE.

IMO - If your not trying to economize I would buy Brembo. They are used almost exclusively on all high performance cars. On new high performance Volvo's too.

What brand of rotors? Balo... 200 1989

I have been consistently unhappy with Brembo and ATE rotors on 'vintage' Volvos and BMWs. Currently, we have 2 Volvos (1991 740 Turbo wagon - wife's daily driver, 1990 240 sedan - family backup daily driver, it was free) and 2 BMWs (1988 528e - my daily driver, 1989 325is - summer/track car). The 740 warped the last set (yup, all 4) of ATE rotors in less than 30k miles. 740s have inferior brakes anyway, so that factors into the equation. The other 3 cars (including the track car) have Balo rotors on them. Balos tend to be the least expensive and last the longest. I warped a pair of ATE powerslot rotors in less than one day on the track - received a full refund (including shipping) for that set. I've never warped a set of Balo rotors under any conditions and will swear by them until they do me wrong. HTH, Mark

I've been consistently happy with ATE rotors on all my RWD cars.
They're the OEM supplier, or one of them anyway so hopefully they know what they're doing.
In any case, you can't lose with FCP's products - they don't sell any of the Taiwan or Chinese junk.
If you were going to use them for some competitive or very hard use, the Power Slots might be the way to go. For the street, standard rotors will be just fine.
I use the PBR pads with mine and have had good results and not too much dust. Volvo pads are dusty, but consistently quiet. Get some of the SylGlide brake grease too if you don't already have some. Essential to a job done right.
Good luck! And great site, by the way, I don't think I ever told you that. I've referred to it a lot.

      Rob (and Philip):

Thanks for the info about the rotors. Looks like I can't go wrong for $50 from FCP on the ATE rotors then; it seems like the best bang for the buck.
The cross-drilled rotors sound tempting, but after reading through the archives, why should I waste my money (nearly twice the amount) for something I really wouldn't need?

ps... Thanks for the comment about the site. One of these days when I find the time, I'd like to get it updated!

I'll be trying the undrilled Zimmermans; I warped a set of ATE Powerslots but that was after hard track use. Zimmerman and Balo seem to have good reps from a little web research I did.

If you want Brembos, here's a better price: http://www.importrp.com/catalog.php?subcat=11&year=15&type=280&subcat1=Brake+Rotors&subcat_id=11&PHPSESSID=f774e153ea5fa9c1e172f1e97f6d1b06
