Cruise Control upgrade for an 84 240 DL model 200 1984

I am trying to put a cruise control system in my 84 240 DL. I got all the parts from a 1991 240. I noticed that the instrument cluster in the 91 model did not have a speedomoter cable, but wires. My 84 240 does has a speedometer cable. Would this be a major problem, or could I use my old instrument cluster with a cable driven speedometer with this 1991 model cruise control?

Sorry for the late post but I have something to add. I'm currently in the same boat as you are. I have a 86-89 cruise control system and I'm looking for a way to make it work off of the cable driven speedo that I have in my 84 245DL. The obvious problem is that the pre-86 cars do not have the electric speedo thus we do not have the signal from the differential needed to go to the cruise contol computer. I'm looking at a way to either retrofit a new sensor or rewire/recircuit the exsisting mechanical pick-up coil in the mechanical speedometer to run the cruise control setup. I will keep you posted with any results. Take Care!

Sincerely,

It is not a mechanical pick up coil. It is a coil, installed on the back of the speedometer, which picks up by inductance.

I'm aware of that. I apoligize for my bad description. I just was trying to say that the coil had no electrical current that needed to go to it to make it work. Anyways I should be done with the wiring diagrams and testing in about two more weeks. I'll post the results when I get through with the testing. Thanks for your time.

I have been thinking about this, and went to the junkyard and pulled the rear differential hub cover off of a 90 240 rear end, and the speed sensor
is not gear driven, but it acts like a normal vehicle speed sensor in a car with a speedometer cable. I still have to pull the rear
end cover off the 84 and see if the set-up is the same. If it is, I will just pull the rear end access cover off with the speed sensor
and put it on the 84. If this works, then I will let you know. Can you think of any other issue that my come up besides the speed sensor that my keep this cruise control set-up from working?
Kevin

Won't work. The cruise control you grabbed will fit '86 and newer.

You need a system for an '85 or older -- completely different beast.

The '86 and newer cluster requires the speedometer sensor in the differential. '85 and older used the cable to the tranny.

If I changed out the differential, can I use it?

"If I changed out the differential, can I use it?"

Yes, but.........

It would be FAR easier to simply change out the car.

And it would be considerably easier to find a cruise control for the early style car to retrofit into your '84.

nope, you need an 84 cruise kit. the 91 cluster will only work with a speed sensor that is in the rear end. the 81 to 85 cars all used the same basic kit. the differences cames with what engine, turbo, etc. a plain 240 lh would be identical for every cruise part 83-85 non turbos. diesels, 260s and turbo, the throttle linkage is different at the intake. good luck, chuck.

ANy other issue with the cruise control other than the speed sensor being in the rear end?

i know the 86 up was way different. i don't know the 90-91 version at all. i was at the dealer from 83 to 88, sorry. i do know the 86 kit wouldn't go for the same reason, no electronic speedo, so, no one tried that kit on an 81-85 car. no reason to. good luck, chuck.

Thanks so much for the information. I am going to keep the press on with that one. I know that there is some wiring issues, but other than the speedometer sensor, I can't find any other problem. I will keep you posted.

Once you've installed a completely different differential assembly, several yards of wiring, and it still doesn't work, you'll end up doing it the way the factory intended. Why not save yourself the expense and hassle and just buy the right setup for your car? When my local pick-n-pull has the setup, I can buy all the parts for about $30. You could sell a complete and functional 91-93 setup for $100 on ebay.

The 91-93 cruise kit is the easiest to install in the right cars, and it'll be the absolute hardest to install in your 84. BTW, did you get the gas pedal assembly, the bracket for the actuator and vacuum switch, and the vacuum pump when you pulled the parts?
