Don't put the new seal in to the same depth as the old one; this avoids having the new lip ride in the groove from the old one.
1/16th of an inch is sufficient.

How easy is it to smooth out the grooves left by the old one? Just curious.

No tips other than get good books, (Bentley and Haynes) and be careful of the weight.

Rear main seal leak can sometimes be reduced by having a super-clean positive crankcase ventilation system. Clean flame trap, all hoses, and maybe even replace the oil separator box. My first - and last - rear main seal leak was handled this way. It was in my before-brickboard days (1989, on a 1984 244DL) and the leak went from big worrk to an occasional drip.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
