kumho 611's? 200 1992

I am lookin for a set of tires to put on my 1992 245 wagon for summer driving. I ahve a full set of winters.

Th esize I am looking to get is a 205 75 14 -- they are just gogin on my stock rims. I called a local place that has the kumho 611 -- I have heard of the kumho 795. Anyone have any input on these tires. The price is right.

thanks

I've been really happy witht the 205/55/15 712s I have on the '88. They stick like glue wet or dry and were a fairly inexpensive tire.

205/75/14 is going to be on the taller side of stock. 205/70/14 is a closer bet, with 195/75/14 being nearly an exact match.

Kumho's USA website doesn't list a 611 ... so who knows where those came from.

From Tirerack reviews, the 795's have been favorable, so you are prolly better off to opt for those (or another favorable touring tire) instead. Everything that makes a car go, stop, and turn relies on those four rubbers.

I was looking into these tires once before. They seem nice but they're getting a little on the old side compared to some of the newer stuff out there. Also, they aren't available in the sizes that dpdy is looking for...

Along with the 712's, they've been out a few years already. Both are still decent tires and an excellent value, but performance-wise, they've since been eclipsed by others.

The 711 does have one big advantage - they offer some 15" sizes that others do not (like 215/55/15).

I know many will not agree with me... there are a couple of Kumho and Hankook model that rate ok, but I personally would not purchase ANY tire made in Korea. And those imported from China (regardless of the brand name on them), I wouldn't use for a tire swing. Although I guess it would slow me down a lot because I would never feel comfortable on them.

And what country of origin makes you feel comfortable?

Enough tire makers have been having quality control issues of sorts.. I really think it's all a crapshoot. Look at the Pirelli's that are notorious for bubbling, the Firestones that blow up, the Contis that won't stay balanced.

So far my tire maker of choice is Yokohama. However the Kumhos, especially the three season ones, are an excellent value.

While you can keep on feeling paranoid, I'll keep driving knowing that I saved about $100 over any comparable makes.

Tire failures ... 200 1992

I had a belt failure in a Michelin before. City driving ... heard a thump-thump-thump ... wasn't even 3 blocks when at a stop light, I heard a loud hiss as the tire just broke - split across the tread.

No company is 100% perfect. With that said, I'd go with one that will offer the best value instead.

And I do give Kumho credit for being proactive in resolving QC issues the day it was brought to light (4/05, after a weekend SCCA race). In recalling their new V710 competition tires, they're taking 'em all back (even used/worn), and in the meantime, a new set of the V700's plus a new set of revised V710's.

Agreed, I love Kuhmos, they're just coming out with more and more good stuff. the Ecsta Supra 712s were their first good tires in the US, and now they've moved on to many other areas of the tire market. I had some of their performance all season Ecsta HP4 716s on my 142 for a few months and loved them. Nice and quiet with good all around grip and lots of tread. My friend with a Nissan 240SX has them and they aren't extreme enough for him. Kuhmo has a lot of new tires out there right now that are awesome. They compete with tires much more expensive. I recommend them. Your choice,

p.s. check out Tirerack.com for more reviews of some other tires you may be interested in...

Peace,
Kyle, with his car sittin outside waiting for him to rig up the fuel filter somehow...

I have no idea about their car tires, but the ones that they make for semi trucks handle great and wear well.
