Hissing Noise 200 1988

When the car idles I can hear a hissing noise around the rear end of the car. There is not a leak in the tires. It sounds like it might be a hose. You can only hear it when the car idles (noise covers it up while driving). Anyone have any suggestions?

Can you be more specific beyond just the "rear end" of the car? Can you listen and find out how far towads the rear, which side, etc.

Check underneath the driver's side back seat. If it's coming from there it's your main fuel pump, which means it's either going bad, the intank pump is not working, or the fuel pump regulator in the engine compartment is faulty.

Hello,

That would be the main fuel pump. They tend to get a little noisier as they age, but generally a hiss or low hum is normal. If it sounds like it is groaning or straining, or your are noticing hesitation or bucking under heavy throttle loads, your in-tank pump may need work. The sure fire way to check in-tank pump operation is to take a large screwdriver and place the metal end on the open filler neck of the gas tank, and put your ear to the plastic end. You should hear a nice gentle pump noise from the start.

Happy Bricking!!!
