Seat coming apart - need a hint - see pictures! 200 1991

Hi All -

My driver's side seat has been slowly coming apart at this one seam for a little while now, and the "open wound" seems to be getting a little bigger now and then.
See pictures here: http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/ts86/seat_rip.htm
(I think I may have posted one of the pictures in this post, but I'm not sure how it will appear or even how to post both of them so the link will accomplish that).

I searched around on the forum, and read in a few places that taking it to a shoe repair place would be good. I can do that, but I wanted to post the pictures and see if anyone has done something like this as a do-it-yourself, and if so I was curious what you used, and I'd also love to hear any general tips for doing this so it lasts.

Also, after searching around the board for tips about fixing this, I came across the recommendation of the "Leatherique" products for our leather seats. I've been using Lexol but I think I'm going to try this stuff for my 13-year old leather!

I know that I may just end up having to take this to a shoe repair business to get it done right, but I wanted to try and see if there are any good ideas from bricksters here, so thanks for reading and maybe I'll make an appt. for the shoe place anyway, but I'd love to hear from you if you've tried this! :-)

Regards,
Travis

The leather appears to be dry. When you sew this seam together it will split at the new seam. You will need to remove the cover, carefully or it will continue to split. Then a new peice of leather needs to be bonded to the old to make the entire section strong, only then can it be sewn sucessfully. In other words take it to the upholstery shop.Good luck,
    Nelson

    Thanks for the suggestions fellas.
I'm going to do this with a needle and thread once someone can suggest or I find out what thread I should use.

Carefully remove the cover from the seat back and take it around to some of the leather shops in your area. It doesn't have to be a shoe repair place, although I'm sure any decent shoe repair shop would be more than capable of doing the job.

Leather is very easy to patch and glue if you wanted to try to repair it yourself. You might look around the Tandy Leather site to see if they have anything useful.

Your seat foam looks good, keep an eye on the local boneyards and ebay for a replacement cover.

I just did a "Leather Repair DIY" search on Google and got 19,000 hits.

    Shoe repair businesses repair shoes.

Auto upholstery repair businesses repair auto upholstery.

    Check your yellow pages.
