I am looking for a list of what the stamp numbers on an engine block mean 200

I have a 1982 Volvo 260 GLE, and I am trying to figure out what type of engine block it is, I have narrowed it down to 2 options, but I need someone that can help me figure out what the difference is between a B23F and a B28F, the only difference is that my engine does not have a smog pump. If someone can help me out with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

79 and below had the B27 engine. 80-82 had the B28 engine. There where some Diesels and rare 260s with the 4CYL engines but like I said these are rare. If your wondering if you have a B23F or the B28F check to see if you have a six cylinder or four cylinder engine. B23F is a 4-Cyl. B28F is a 6-Cyl. The B23F has the dist up front. The B27/28F has the dist in the rear of the engine block. If you need more help with the B28F let me know. I pride myself on knowing these engines front to back. Good Luck!

Sincerely,

if you have a 4, maybe someone threw out the v-6 after it prematurely
died and installed the 2.1 or 2.3 i-4. The 200-series v-6 engines
were prone to problems.

Um, that's a common misconception.

There were quite a few cars that bore the VIN of 264 models that came from the factory with B21F engines. I've had one.

Some cars had the VIN of 24x models, but came with the 6-cylinder D24 diesel as well. I've had a couple of those, too.

However, the original post says it is a 1982 GLE. The 4-cylinder 264s were all badged as GL, and only sold in 80-81, so you are probably correct in that respect. The factory-installed engine on an '82 264GLE would have been *either* a B28F (2.8 liter, V-6, gas) or a D24 (2.4 liter, I-6, diesel).

you are right about the d24s being 260s, but every 1 i've seen says diesel on the trunk and not gle. most d24s i saw were gls, anyways. there are b21/264 gls, too. i've never seen a b21 gle. he posted gle and i bit. maybe it's badge upgrading. we'll see, chuck.
