What is black plastic tank inside the front bumper on a 1989 740 turbo used for?

To store extra vacuum ! Check the other end and make sure that the cap is still on it.

I was waiting for someone to know what tank I was talking about. Is this the equivalent of the behind dash vacuum reservoir of the 240? On another subject any idea what type of differential is in a 1989 740 turbo that spins posi?

EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system. As I understand it its essentially a charcoal filled container for recycling combustion gases. I've never really understood it, how it works, or how it needs to maintain.

18 year old charcoal's still effective? THATSA SPICY MEATABALL!

All I've done is to replace the vacuum lines to and from it when I overhauled the rest of the lines. Other than that I just leave it alone.

(some quick research shows that the other method for this is called SCR, but that the material used must be replaced every 5,000 miles while EGR seems to last like 150,000 miles or something.)

I don't think any 1989 US spec Volvos got EGR. My 50 state legal wagon (mitsu turbo) sure doesn't.

this isn't the ps tank. its inside the aluminium bumper in the front and had a vacuum hose connected to it.
