Neutral Safety Switch (PNP) changeout 900 1995

I need to replace the neutral safety switch in my 1995 960. My mechanic has adjusted it a couple of times and although I haven't been there when he made the adjustments I got the impression he did it from the top by removing the console. Can the switch be replaced from the top, by taking out the console?
I have seen the step-by-step instructions in the FAQs here on BrickBoard that tell how to do it from underneath the car but I don't have the equipment nesessary to safely do this procedure from the bottom. Can it be done from the top?

If he adjusted something from the top it wasn't the "PNP" switch. It is located low on the pasenger side of the transmission.

There is a micro switch and solenoid making up the lock function on top. The PNP switch tells the microprocessor what the position of the transmission lever is and is seperate from the locking function.

Just a note: If you are handy enough to remove this switch (takes some wiggling around exhaust and maybe cooler lines) then you can also spend another half hour to take the switch apart, degrease, clean the contacts (400 WD sandpaper) and regrease it with high temp grease. I haven't had any problems with mine since I did it three years ago.

So this switch can actually be repaired? I was always under the impression that it had to be replaced.

The PNP sensor is easy to disassemble, clean, re-lube and reassemble. Use high temp synthetic grease and clean up the contacts with fine grained sand/emory paper.

Try to use the "L" position every so often to keep the contacts clean in the sensor.
