When I called my insurance company to include my son's new 1992 240 on my policy, I was told that the VIN # did not indicate it had ABS. When I told them that I saw the unit under the hood, I was asked if it was a 2 or 4 wheel ABS. I didn't know the answer to that. So does anyone know if it is a 2 or 4 wheel ABS? (And why doesn't the VIN indicate it has ABS?)

    It's definitely four-wheel ABS.

    Hello,

    Woohooo!!! Another insurance company trying to play stupid and screw the average consumer for a few more bucks.

    Volvo in their safety wisdom has only ever installed 4-channel, 4-wheel ABS on their cars. Single channel 2-wheel rear ABS can be found on some pick-up's and SUV's. 3-channel, 4-wheel ABS can be found on some cheaper domestic and import cars.

    Take a picture of the accumulator under the hood and send it to the bastard insurance company.

    Happy Bricking!!!(Can you sense my hostility towards car insurance companies???)

      Rear wheel drive Volvos have that "cheap" 3-channel ABS.
      The front wheels each have a speed sensor. The rears get their signal from the speedometer sensor- it doesn't modulate braking power to each rear wheel separately.
      The 850/S70/S40/S80 etc cars have a true4 channel system.
      That said, it DOES work on all 4 wheels, so the insurance company can be happy that yes indeed, you are driving the safest possible car and they need to give you the best possible rate.

      They ought to KNOW anyway that all 1992 and 93 240's all have ABS, and what kind it is- don't they have all this stuff in their rating computer files?

        That's a new one to me ;-). But great info on the system. I thought that the ABS on the 240 was the same Bosch III system on early 700's. As far as the insurance company is concerned, yet again they are pretending to be stupid to gouge the customers for a few extra bucks...
