Adding a trailer to my 1990 240DL - can it be done? 200 1990

Hey everyone-

My 1990 240DL (B230F) recently rolled over 106,000 miles, and still has plenty of power - so I recently got to thinking about adding a small trailer hitch with the idea of being able to pull barrels of grass clippings to the local dump in the summer (I have a big lawn).

Is this a feasible idea? Do I need anything extra concerning the transmission for cooling purposes? Can a 240DL even handle a trailer safely????

Anyone who has done this mod and can give me any tips, thanks in advance.

    Do it. No problems.

Look here or on E-bay for an original Volvo hitch. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. All 200 hitches will fit all 200's...any year.

They just fit Nice and clean compared to aftermarket.

Fear not the 240 is an excellent towing machine. I covered 300 miles towing this Caprice Classic. Just remember to plan ahead for stops and turns.

    Good Luck

My old 76 244DL had like 400000kms+ on it (the speedo stoped working after that), it had a reco engine put in it at some stage, but the BW35 used to not like finding reverse some times (or top gear at other times), when I got it I found a secondhand bar in the paper, fitted it, wacked in some wiring, and towed all sorts of things, including a very large trailer with 2 motorbikes in it a few times.
I would not be too worried if I were you, my 244 was a very able tow car, best I have ever used actually.

The car has been passed on now, but it's still going strong with the new owner, who also likes to rev the ring out of it and pop it into reverse when it sticks, yet it still ain't broke.

You just need to buy a Volvo or other good brand of hitch- Drawtite, or even UHaul make decent stuff. It needs to be rated for the load you'll pull- in your case, even the lowest class of hitch will be sufficient.

The car's rated to tow it's own weight - 3000 lbs.
And not that you should, but I have done that- towed a 240, on a trailer, with another 240. It's a bit slow. That was also a long time ago, and now I'd just call for a flatbed...

Note that you are responsible for making sure your car's up to it: good brakes, suspension, tires, and lighting all need to be part of the package for safe towing of any load.

Max. rated tow capacity is 3300 lb. - more than quite a few "SUVs"
and minivans today. A small utility trailer shouldn't be a problem.
Save yourself a lot of hassle and install seperate lights on the
trailer for brakes and turn signals rather than futzing with
converting the Volvo's two-bulb system to an American-type single
bulb system. The dual-bulb system is probably slightly safer as
well - I don't know why the systems which share a bulb between
brakes and turn signals are even still legal in America.

My 240, my dad's 240, his old 240, all had hitches. The most weight we've ever pulled was approx. 1500 lbs. Just remember that the car is heavier with a trailer and won't stop as well. Other than that, there is no reason not to have a hitch on your car.

Just make sure that whoever patches in the lighting does a good job of sealing where they put the wires through the body. (Assuming you are going to light the trailer. Brakes, parking lights, etc.)

My last 245, with well over 250k miles on it, towed a loaded tow dolly 1000 miles at a time 4 times in 2 weeks. In each case, the loaded weight was at least 2500 pounds. You can easily tow a small utility trailer with 240.

BTW, the most important thing to remember when towing with any vehicle is to allow extra distance for stopping.
