Why is the timing off? 700 1990

A friend of mine has a 765T with that newfangled LH-2.4 stuff. All is well except for a few things. The most server malady is the timing which appears to be about 20-23 degrees BTDC.

On a car with fixed timing, what can cause the timing to be so far off?

My first thought was maybe a plug wire is connected incorrectly, but supposedly they're all on the right leads. Is it possible to check the alignment of the crank position sensor without pulling the transmission?

i'd be suspious of the crank pulley, they tend to walk around the hub. if i saw 23 degrees at idle, that's my first choice, replace the pulley., good luck, chuck.

No, that's my car that needs a crank pulley. The pulley on the other wagon doesn't make any noise, timing doesn't jump around, and multiple attempts to check the timing (over several weeks) resulted in the same readings... tranny was rebuilt three years ago..

if the flywheel was off by 1 bolt, i doubt it would start and idle, much less run. each wrong bolt hole is 45 degrees. the only way to check is to zero the motor and pull the speed sensor. if you see a window, you're right and i'm amazed. if the flywheel doesn't have a window showing, then it should be right. more than 1 pulley has walked around. if you wanna be sure, pull the upper belt cover and see if the marks all line up. that's all i got, if all is right and it's really 23 degrees, i got nothing. good luck, chuck.

Well the idle is rough, and the car is not quite as peppy as it should be. So something's off.

The pulley has pretty much been ruled out because it hasn't made any noise like its' slipping, and the two timing measurements (weeks apart) came up with the same results. Contrast that with my car. Twice now the crank pulley has made that squealing noise as it slips when I start the car, and the last time I checked the timing it was at an indicated 0deg BTDC. The car accelerates way too quickly for the timing to be set at 0.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check that next weekend when I have time.

Just guessing but if it is still running half decent and the timing shows being that much off I would suspect that perhaps the harmonic balancer is breaking down and has slipped??
