Hello all,
What parts will need to be harvested from the donor car to make an M-47 transmission work with a 1980 wagon, B21F, 3-speed auto (not for long!)? Transmission itself, pedals, linkages, flywheel, anterior part of the driveshaft???
Thanks,
Keith

Keith,
Pull everything from the donor car: drive shafts (both - they are different), center cross member, install new center carrier bearing and rubber dougnut, trans, flywheel (have it machined/ resurfaced), buy a clutch kit for that tranny, install a new clutch cable (use the original as a spare- keep in trunk), and pedal cluster.
The firewall on an automatic needs to have a hole punched ( electricians punch works great) into it. Look at the firewall of a standard and notice that the hole is in an area which does not require reinforcement. The clutch cable movement is not great enough to worry about damage to the firewall.
The speedo presents a challange in that the mechanical speedo (in your 240) is driven (mechanically) from the trans (auto/ manual-up to mid/ late 80's) while the electronic speedo's are wired to a sensor located in the differential (rear axel pumpkin). You have to figure a way of getting info to the speedo. Best bet, if you stick with the M47, is to slap in a complete axel/ pumpkin that has the electronic sender.
Actually, you may want to consider using the 4 + electric OD (M46). A cleaner swap.
Be glad to assist....I did the swap on my 89, 245. Be glad to share how I dealt with "...now what !!??'s"
Worth while project.....you'll be glad you did.

Thanks for the responses so far!!! Another question- is the flywheel on a B230 interchangeable with the flywheel on a B21, or will I need to find a MT flywheel from a B21?
Thanks,
Keith

The very same mechanic told me there are no differences in flywheels for any 240 4-cyl.

uhhh, there are several flavors of flywheels for the 240's, standard, deep dish, LH2.4, etc., which go hand in hand with clutch diameter and specfic use, and year of 240.

All the above,
Plus a method of attaching the speedo drive cable to the back of the gearbox, as M47 equipped 240's all had electric speedos with pickups at the rear diff. I also had a mechanic tell me that if there isn't already a clutch cable hole, you will have to make one and reinforce it or the cable will stretch the firewall.
Happy Bricking!!!

You could always find an aftermarket speedo that reads electrically
from a magnatic driveshaft pickup and install it in the cluster
in place of the Volvo speedo. You should be able to find one of
approx the correct size - since the stock speedo only measures speed
and distance (no warning lights) you aren't losing any functionality.
