Spark Arrestor aka Flame Trap - PCV System 200 1986

I have a 1986 240 with 230,000 miles and going strong.

My mechanic (great guy who I trust) said he put a new spark arrestor in (also known as a flame trap) which is part of the PCV system. He said it should be cleaned once in a while.

I cannot find this part. Could someone please describe where this part is and how to keep in clean.

Thanks for any advice.

I change them every year so - a couple of bucks per trap from FCP Groton. Once you locate it as described earlier, the serviceable part of the trap is a concave cylindrical white piece of plastic with many holes through the concave surface. Be sure the small tube leading out from under the main piece is clear by using a paper clip. If the trap clogs bad things happen and fluids come out of where they shouldn't.

Good luck.

David

Your best bet would be to have your mechanic point it out to you, and tell you what/how to clean it. As you start cleaning it yourself, be sure to clean the small diameter hose going over to the intake manifold, as well as the spart arrestor itself.

It's below the intake manifold, between the 2 & 3 cylinders. It won't look like much, as it's inside of some black rubber hose fittings. Check the 700-900 FAQ list, there's plenty of information there on the flame trap and its maintenance.
